Light Jetsfor Sale

New and pre-owned prices, the models to shortlist and what to check before you buy.

Light jets are the most popular first business jet. They seat four to nine people, fly legs of two to four hours, and land at short runways close to where you are going. For trips across Europe or between neighbouring US states, a light jet does the job of a larger aircraft at a fraction of the running cost.

Several light jets are certified for a single pilot, including the Phenom 300E, the Citation CJ series, the HondaJet and the Pilatus PC-24. Owner-pilots like that, but most owners still fly with two pilots, because insurers price single-pilot operations higher and a second pilot makes long days safer.

The checks further down separate a good light jet from an expensive one. To have us search for one, send the form at the end of the page to our sales team.

Before you buy

What to check on light jets

Crew and insurance

Ask your insurance broker for a quote before you make an offer. Single-pilot operation and low pilot hours on type can double the premium, and some insurers require two pilots whatever the certification says.

Engine program status

Light-jet engines (Williams FJ44, Pratt & Whitney PW535 and PW617) are often enrolled on hourly programs. An engine off program can cost $500,000 or more to overhaul, so the buyer deducts it from the price.

Runway performance

Compare the aircraft's landing and take-off distances with the shortest runways you use, on a hot day and at full load. The PC-24 and the CJ series handle short and unpaved strips better than most.

Avionics generation

A Garmin G3000 or Collins Pro Line 21 cockpit with current updates keeps the jet legal in modern airspace. Older avionics can need a $200,000 or larger upgrade to meet mandates.

Demand for light jets is steady, and well-kept Phenom 300s and CJ3 and CJ4s sell quickly. Older types such as the Beechjet 400A and Hawker 400XP cost far less to buy, but parts and maintenance costs rise with age, so compare the total cost over five years, not the purchase price.

Very light jets, from about $3 million new for a Vision Jet, are the cheapest way into jet ownership. Their cabins are small and their range is short, so they suit owners who fly one or two passengers on legs under two hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a light jet cost?
New light jets cost about $9 million to $12 million. Pre-owned light jets eight to fifteen years old sell for about $3 million to $7 million, and very light jets start at about $1.5 million used.
What is the cheapest light jet to buy?
Older pre-owned types such as the Beechjet 400A, Hawker 400XP, early Citation CJs and Eclipse very light jets can cost $1 million to $3 million. Running costs stay close to those of newer jets, so budget for them.
Can you fly a light jet yourself?
Yes. With a type rating you can fly single-pilot certified jets such as the Phenom 300E, Citation CJ series, HondaJet or Pilatus PC-24. Insurers will set experience requirements, and many owners still add a second pilot.
How far can a light jet fly?
Most light jets fly 3,000 to 4,000 km non-stop with passengers, about three and a half to four and a half hours. Very light jets fly about 2,000 to 2,700 km.
How much does it cost to run a light jet?
Expect about $500,000 to $800,000 a year in fixed costs plus $2,200 to $3,500 per flight hour. At 250 hours a year the total is about $1.1 million to $1.7 million, before depreciation.
