Flying private to Aspen

Aspen–Pitkin County Airport sits a few minutes from town, high in a narrow valley. It is one of the most demanding airports in the United States: it operates in daylight, limits the size of aircraft it accepts, and mountain weather can close it at short notice. On holiday weekends its ramp fills early.

Eagle County Regional Airport, near Vail, is the usual alternative. It takes larger jets and has more parking, and Aspen is about an hour and a half away by road. Many groups land in Aspen and send the aircraft to wait at Eagle or elsewhere until the return.

From Dallas, Los Angeles or Chicago a light or midsize jet flies non-stop. From New York or Miami a super midsize is the comfortable choice, and the aircraft has to meet Aspen's size and performance limits.

Can a jet land?

Yes, at Aspen–Pitkin County, but only aircraft that meet its size and performance limits, in daylight and good weather. Larger jets use Eagle County, about an hour and a half away, and we check your aircraft against Aspen's rules before we quote.

From Aspen–Pitkin County the town is a short drive. From Eagle County it is about an hour and a half by car.

Before you book

  • Book the Christmas and New Year flights and parking early; the ramp and aircraft sell out weeks ahead.
  • Plan morning arrivals: afternoon weather and daylight rules cause most winter diversions.
  • Keep Eagle County as the back-up and budget for a car if the aircraft is diverted there.

Best time to go: December to early April for skiing; Christmas, New Year and Presidents' Day are the peak weeks. June to September for summer hiking, music and ideas festivals.
