Flying private to St Barths

St Barths' airport has one of the world's shortest and steepest approaches: a short runway between a hill and the beach that only small turboprops flown by specially qualified pilots can use, and only in daylight.

Private jets land at Princess Juliana on St Maarten, about 15 minutes away by air. From there a turboprop such as a Twin Otter, Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12 takes you across; the ferry is the slower alternative.

From New York, Boston or Miami it is a non-stop flight in a midsize or super midsize jet; from Europe, a heavy jet flies it non-stop.

Can a jet land?

No. St Barths' runway is too short for jets. Fly into St Maarten (SXM) and take a turboprop for the 15-minute hop; we book both legs together.

St Maarten to St Barths: about 15 minutes by turboprop, daylight only; or a ferry of around 45 minutes.

Before you book

  • Arrive at St Maarten with daylight to spare: St Barths' airport closes at sunset.
  • Book Christmas and New Year months ahead; both the jets and the island hops sell out.
  • Keep bags soft and light for the turboprop; the operator will ask for weights.

Best time to go: December to April is the dry high season, busiest over Christmas and New Year; summer is quieter, with the hurricane season from June to November.
