Flying private to the Whitsundays & Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is the only island in the Whitsundays with an airport that takes jets, which is why most private flights to the region land there. You step off the aircraft a few minutes from the marina, the resort buggies and the boats out to Whitehaven Beach and the reef.

On the mainland, Whitsunday Coast Airport near Proserpine serves Airlie Beach, about half an hour away by road, and the resorts reached by boat from there. It is also the usual choice when Hamilton Island has no parking left for your aircraft during a stay.

From the east-coast cities the flight is short enough for a light or midsize jet: Brisbane is the quickest, Sydney and Melbourne a comfortable few hours. Helicopters and seaplanes then cover the islands, the reef and Heart Reef scenic flights.

Can a jet land?

Yes. Hamilton Island Airport takes business jets and airliners, and Whitsunday Coast Airport on the mainland does too. Aircraft parking on Hamilton Island is limited, so for a longer stay the aircraft may drop you off and reposition.

From Hamilton Island the resorts are minutes away; to other islands and Airlie Beach it is a boat, seaplane or helicopter transfer, which we can arrange with the flight.

Before you book

  • Book aircraft parking on Hamilton Island with the flight; in school holidays and around Hamilton Island Race Week in August it fills up.
  • Pack soft bags where you can: resort buggies, boats and seaplanes have little room for hard cases.
  • If you are hopping to a smaller island by seaplane or helicopter, check the weight limit per passenger and bag.

Best time to go: May to October is the dry season with calm, clear days. November to May is warmer and wetter, and marine stinger season means swimming in stinger suits.
