How the range map works
The globe draws a circle around the departure city using the aircraft's published nonstop range, measured as great-circle distance (the shortest path over the Earth's surface, which is why long routes look curved). The cities listed under the globe are the ones within 90% of that range, a small margin for real-world conditions. Flight times are the distance divided by the aircraft's cruise speed, so they leave out taxi, climb and descent.
Why real range is shorter than the brochure figure
Published range assumes a light load, still air and standard reserves. On a real trip, several things cut into it:
- Headwinds. A strong jet stream on the nose can shorten a transatlantic leg enough to need a fuel stop.
- Payload. Every passenger and bag adds weight, and a full cabin can mean less fuel.
- Runways. Short, hot or high-altitude runways limit take-off weight, and with it fuel.
- Reserves and alternates. The crew must carry fuel to reach another airport if the destination closes.
For price estimates we assume about 85% of published range is usable with a full cabin and reserves. The operator makes the final call on every flight.

When a fuel stop makes sense
A smaller jet with one short fuel stop can cost less than a larger jet flying nonstop, because smaller jets have lower hourly rates. The trade-off is time: our estimates allow 45 minutes on the ground per stop, plus the extra landing and take-off. If the route is close to an aircraft's limit, ask us for both options and compare.
