Private Jet vsFirst Class Calculator

Compare the estimated cost of chartering a whole jet with buying first-class seats for everyone in your group. Pick a route, the number of passengers and your fare.

Suggested: the smallest jet size that seats your group and flies the distance, nonstop if possible.

Pre-filled with a rough estimate of a typical published short-haul (under 1,500 km) one-way fare. Edit it to your real fare.

London to Geneva, 784 km, one way, 4 passengers

Private jet (Very Light Jets)
$6,100
$1,525 per passenger
First class
$3,200
$800 x 4

The private jet costs about $2,900 more than first class for this group ($725 more per person).

Jet estimate based on the Embraer Phenom 100EV (6 seats): about 1h 38m including taxi and climb, nonstop, at an estimated $3,200 per hour plus airport fees and taxes.

Time on the ground: we assume 2 hours at the airport for an airline flight and 15 minutes at a private terminal, so each traveller saves roughly 1h 45m before and after the flight. Airline connections and schedules are not included.

How the private jet price is estimated

We measure the great-circle distance between the two airports and work out the flight time for aircraft of the chosen size in our fleet: distance divided by 85% of the aircraft's cruise speed (an average over climb, cruise and descent), plus about 25 minutes for taxi, climb and descent on each leg. If the route is longer than the aircraft can fly with a full cabin and reserves, we add a fuel stop.

The price is the estimated hourly rate multiplied by those hours (with the minimum hours operators bill per flying day), plus typical landing and handling fees and 7.5% for taxes. Among the aircraft that can do the trip, we show the middle one by price, so the figure is typical for the size, not the cheapest. The aircraft's empty flight home is not included, because it depends on where the aircraft is based.

How the first-class side works

First class is simply your fare multiplied by the number of passengers. The fare is pre-filled with a rough estimate for the distance band (short-haul under 1,500 km, medium-haul up to 4,000 km, long-haul beyond). These are conservative one-way figures, not live prices. Many short routes only sell business class, and published first-class fares on long routes are often higher than our figure. Enter the fare you have been quoted for a fair comparison.

What the numbers leave out

  • Time. We assume 2 hours at the airport for an airline flight and 15 minutes at a private terminal. On a busy hub, or with a connection, the gap is bigger.
  • Schedules. A charter leaves when you are ready and can use smaller airports closer to where you are going.
  • Round trips. Flying back on the same aircraft changes the maths. So can an empty leg, a one-way repositioning flight sold at a discount.
  • Baggage. Small jets have limited hold space. Check the aircraft's baggage volume for skis, golf bags or large cases.

Reading the result

The per-passenger figure is the useful one. With one or two travellers, first class almost always costs less. With a full cabin on a short or medium route, the gap narrows and can reverse. For firm numbers on your dates, request a quote. To check whether a jet can fly your route nonstop, use the private jet range map.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private jet ever cheaper than first class?
Sometimes, on shorter routes with a full cabin. A charter is priced per aircraft, not per seat, so the cost per person falls as you add passengers, while first-class tickets add up one by one. On long-haul routes with one or two travellers, first class is usually far cheaper.
Where does the pre-filled first-class fare come from?
It is a rough, conservative estimate of a typical published one-way fare for the distance band, not a live price. Airline fares vary a lot by route, date and airline, so replace it with the fare you have been quoted.
Does the charter estimate include the return flight?
No, it is one way. For a round trip, the operator may charge crew overnights while the aircraft waits, or the aircraft flies home empty and comes back. Our quote tool prices round trips properly.
Why does the calculator pick a jet size for me?
It suggests the smallest jet size that seats your group and can fly the route, nonstop if one can. That is normally the cheapest sensible option. You can pick a larger size for more cabin space or baggage room.
How accurate is the private jet price?
It is an estimate built from average hourly rates, typical airport fees and taxes. A real quote depends on the aircraft's base, your dates, any positioning flight and availability, and can be higher or lower.
