What fuel adds to an hour of charter

Indicative fuel burn per hour multiplied by today's spot price, next to our estimated all-in hourly charter rate. FBOs charge more than spot, so treat the fuel share as a floor.

Jet sizeFuel / hourCharter / hourFuel share
Light jet$782$4,50017%
Midsize jet$1,042$6,00017%
Super midsize jet$1,216$8,00015%
Heavy jet$1,737$11,00016%
Ultra long range$2,171$15,00014%

A 10% rise in the spot price adds about $104 to an hour in a midsize jet.

Empty leg price index

Every empty leg with a listed price since 7 Jul 2026, set against our estimate for a one-way charter of the same route in the same jet size. That estimate leaves out the aircraft's empty flight back, which a normal one-way charter often pays for, so the real saving is usually bigger. Sizes with fewer than five priced legs are left out.

How to read these numbers

Jet fuel is the cost that moves fastest in private aviation. Operators buy it at the airport, where the price follows the wholesale market with a delay of days to weeks, plus the FBO's own charges. When the spot price climbs for a month or more, charter quotes tend to follow, often through a fuel surcharge.

Empty legs are one-way flights an aircraft would otherwise fly without passengers. Their price is set by the operator to cover part of a flight that is happening anyway, which is why the index sits well below normal charter rates. The catch is flexibility: the date, time and route are fixed, and the flight can be cancelled if the main booking changes.

The airport ranking shows where business jets actually are. It follows the season: ski resorts in winter, the Mediterranean in summer, and spikes around big events. Counts depend on volunteer receivers, so an airport with poor coverage can be busier than it looks here.

Method and sources

  • Fuel: EIA series EER_EPJK_PF4_RGC_DPG (FRED: DJFUELUSGULF), refreshed several times a day. Fuel burn per hour is an indicative figure per jet size, the same one our CO2 calculator uses.
  • Empty legs: listings collected daily from operator and broker sites. Prices are converted to US dollars at fixed approximate rates. The charter estimate for each leg is the median, across the jets of that size in our fleet, of the price our quote tool shows for the same route: hourly rate, minimum billed hours, airport fees and taxes.
  • Charter rates: JetsFly's estimated hourly rates, the same ones behind our aircraft pages and quote tool. They are estimates, not quotes.
  • Airports: tracked business jet types from adsb.lol (data under the ODbL licence), sampled every two minutes. A jet counts once a day at an airport when it is seen on the ground or taxiing there, so jets flying over or approaching a nearby airport are not counted. The airport counts keep no registration, callsign, owner or type: each visit is kept only as an anonymous code that changes every day and at every airport, and the key behind it is deleted when the day ends.

Frequently asked questions

How much does jet fuel cost right now?
The chart shows the U.S. Gulf Coast spot price of kerosene-type jet fuel, published daily by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It is a wholesale price. At the airport, an FBO adds transport, taxes and its own margin, so the price per gallon you see on an invoice is higher and varies a lot between airports.
How much of a private jet charter price is fuel?
The table on this page multiplies an indicative fuel burn per hour by the current spot price and compares it with our estimated all-in hourly charter rate for each jet size. At spot prices fuel is usually a minority of the hourly price; crew, maintenance, insurance, fees and the operator's margin make up the rest. Because FBO prices are above spot, the real share is higher than the table shows.
What is the empty leg price index?
Every empty leg JetsFly's tracker lists is kept, with its route, jet size and asking price. For the index we convert each price to US dollars and set it against our estimate for a one-way charter of the same route in a jet of the same size. The figure shown for each size is the median saving across its priced legs.
How are the busiest airports counted?
Every two minutes we read the positions of tracked business jets from community ADS-B receivers. A jet seen on the ground or taxiing at an airport counts once for that airport that day; jets flying over or approaching a nearby airport are not counted. The ranking adds up these daily visits over the last seven days, so a jet seen at an airport on three different days counts three times. Coverage is best in North America and Europe, so airports elsewhere are undercounted.
Can I use this data?
Yes, you are welcome to quote the figures with a link to this page as the source. The fuel price itself comes from the U.S. EIA via FRED, and should be credited to them.
